You may be wondering: Why should I learn about the foundations of the American Government? Well before we can even get to the meat and potatoes of government we have to give it all a base. You wouldn’t eat your dinner without a plate would you? You wouldn’t build a house without a solid foundation first either. We have to establish a solid foundation and learn all about what is government before we can dig deeper into the subject.
The start of the American government and the influences that impacted its creation are worth studying and getting excited for. So much happened that played a pivotal role. And some of our most recognized political figures come from this era. We get to look at figures such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin. We’ll be looking at documents that influenced these thinkers such as the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, and the Petition of Right.
It’s important we learn about the different types of government and where government comes from. And it’s really important that we recognize the American government as we know it did not spring up from the ground or off the tip of Jefferson’s pen. Many things played into the formation of the American government such as the different Acts that were passed by the King that began to incite anger with the colonists. We also get to see that it wasn’t smooth sailing for the Founding Fathers. There were arguments amongst them as demonstrated by the fierce rivalry of the Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist. Without knowing all of this and building that foundation, learning about the function of the modern government wouldn’t have much of a leg to stand on.
